Rooftop farms have graced our virtual pages on numerous occasions before, but recently we came across an example with an interesting twist. German company Frisch vom Dach is building an aquaponic farm on the roof of an old malthouse in Berlin that will produce both vegetables and fish.
Frisch vom Dach has already built a container farm on much the same premise as the rooftop version it’s now in the process of creating. Constructed from an upcycled shipping container with integrated fish tank and attached greenhouse, that container version operates on a closed water cycle whereby fish waste fertilizes the plants, and the plants purify the water. Now, plans call for the rooftop version atop Malzfabrik Berlin, operating with a similar system and producing both vegetables and fish reared according to sustainable aquaculture guidelines. The rooftop farm is expected to be ready for its first harvest in 2013, with a portion sold in an onsite shop and the rest going to local retailers.
Frisch vom Dach is currently seeking partners for investment, planning and purchasing opportunities. One to get involved in early?
